How to use this tool
  1. Check the urgent signs above. Call first if you are concerned.
  2. Choose your pet, symptoms and any other hazards.
  3. Enter only details you know. Check the weight and units. Choose unknown instead of guessing.
  4. Read the next action first. You can copy, download or print the recap. Emailing it is optional and must not delay care.

For a known dog exposure, use the actual plain chocolate weight. Cat and uncertain-input paths provide professional-contact guidance, not a numerical clearance.

How the estimate works

Estimated combined theobromine and caffeine exposure in mg/kg = chocolate grams × assumed concentration in mg/g ÷ dog weight in kg. One pound is 0.45359237 kg; one ounce is 28.349523125 g. The amount assumes the entered chocolate was swallowed. Actual concentrations vary.

Plain productAssumed mg/g
Milk chocolate2.3
White chocolate0.04
Unsweetened baking chocolate15.5
Unsweetened cocoa powder28.5
Labeled dark bar15.5 × cocoa percentage ÷ 100

Dog reference points: signs around 20 mg/kg, heart effects around 40 to 50 mg/kg, and seizures at 60 mg/kg or more. This tool escalates at 40 mg/kg. Individual responses vary. These are not safety boundaries, and no dog bands are applied to cats.

My dog ate chocolate but seems normal. What should I do?

Contact a veterinarian or animal poison service now. Signs can be delayed, so normal behavior does not establish safety. Share the product, amount, weight and timing you know.

Why can I not enter the whole weight of a brownie?

A brownie, cookie or filled candy contains other ingredients in variable proportions. Treating its whole weight as plain chocolate gives a misleading estimate. Select Dessert / mixed food and share the packaging or recipe with the professional.

What if the food or amount is unknown?

Choose the unknown or mixed-food option and call. Do not enter an invented number. Save the packaging, remaining food and a photo of the ingredients for the professional assessing your pet.

Does white chocolate mean there is no concern?

No. The methylxanthine estimate is only one part of the incident. Other ingredients, packaging and the food itself can still require veterinary assessment.

Can I use this for a cat?

Choose Cat to get professional-contact guidance and an incident recap. This version deliberately provides no numeric feline risk classification.
